"No war in history was so much a woman's war as the Civil War," said an article during the vast American conflict. During this time, women exerted themselves in many aspects of warfare. They worked as nurses, spies, cooks, vivandiers, as well as providing other kinds of support. And some of the women even fought on the battlefield, though many had to disguise themselves as men to do it. There are more than 600 known cases.
This documentary tells the unknown stories of these little known heroines; from Loreta Velazquez, who immigrated from Cuba, raised a regiment, led them into battle in her attempts to be the next Joan of Arc, to Lizzie Compton, who served as a soldier in seven regiments before the age of 18, to Sarah Edmonds, whose story stretches the length of the war in two theaters of operation. The women's tales are brought to life through their own words as recorded in letters, journals, and memoirs, as well as through the vast knowledge of historians DeAnne Blanton, Wendy King, and Joyce Henry.
'The Forgotten Grave' brings you these amazing stories that have in many cases been lost to history, which all too often forgets the enormous impact that women have had on the history of America.
